EU plastic in decline

At the European Industry Summit, the European industry association PlasticsEurope urged European authorities to take “decisive political action to stabilise and secure plastics production, innovation and circularity in Europe – before further capacity, investment, and know-how are irreversibly lost.”

Signed by the association’s president, Rob Ingram, and managing director, Virginia Janssens, the appeal highlights the difficulties facing the European plastics industry, which has seen its market share decline from 22% to 12% in twenty years, despite growing global production. “This decline is not driven by falling demand, but by investment shifting to more competitive regions” the document states. “Increased reliance on imports exposes Europe to supply disruptions, geopolitical risk and uneven global standards.
