British plastics industry hit by the war
The British Plastics Federation (BPF), the UK trade association representing the plastics sector, has gauged the industry’s reaction to the negative effects of the war in Iran through a survey to which 104 managers from as many companies responded. The results are interesting, though not surprising: companies are complaining of widespread shortages of raw materials accompanied by sharp cost increases, a situation that the sector’s most experienced executives describe as unprecedented. Going into more detail, 58% of the companies surveyed reported a ‘severe’ or ‘significant’ impact on their operations, and almost all of them – 98% – recorded increases in raw material prices or operating costs. A situation set to worsen over the next three months for 68% of respondents. Furthermore, six out of ten companies have seen orders postponed or cancelled. The impact, says BPF, affects not only the availability of virgin polymers, but also that of additives, masterbatches, components, machinery and equipment, not to mention higher transport and logistics costs.
