Recycled
Ahead of the forthcoming publication of the Circular Economy Package by EU Commissioner Roswall, three European recycling associations – FEAD, Plastics Recyclers Europe and Recycling Europe – have published an appeal for priority to be given to recycled plastic produced in Europe in order to meet recycled content requirements in products. The plastic waste collection and recycling associations recommend three measures that should be adopted urgently in order to preserve European recycling capacity. Firstly, recycled plastic in beverage bottles placed on the EU market should come exclusively from post-consumer plastic waste collected and recycled in Europe. Similarly, it should be ensured that recycled content requirements for all products manufactured in Europe are met using recycled materials from post-consumer waste collected and processed in Europe. Finally, it calls for the adoption and application of strict mirror clauses for the implementation and enforcement of measures relating to products imported from third countries, in order to ensure consistency in environmental standards and the traceability of recycled content in products sold on the European market.
