Production starts the year on a negative note
The industrial production index compiled by Istat recorded two declines of the same magnitude in January: -0.6% compared with December 2025 and the same month last year. This trend is common across the main industrial sectors, with the exception of energy.
The rubber and plastics manufacturing sector showed a decline of -1.5% in January compared with December, but recorded an increase of +0.8% compared with January 2024.
It should be noted that 2025 ended, for the rubber and plastics sector, with a contraction in production of -0.6% compared with 2024.
The sectors of economic activity recording the largest year-on-year increases in the first month of the year are the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air (+14.4%), the manufacture of transport equipment (+7.1%) and mining and quarrying (+3.4%). The sharpest declines, on the other hand, were observed in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-12.9%), the manufacture of chemical products
