15% tariffs

An agreement has finally been reached: goods imported from the European Union into the United States will be subject to a basic tariff of 15%, which will also apply to the automotive sector (currently subject to a 27.5% tariff), but apparently not to steel and aluminium, which will remain subject to a 50% tariff.
Mutual zero tariffs have also been established on a range of products including aircraft and components, certain chemicals (to be specified), selected generic drugs, semiconductor equipment, agricultural products, natural resources and critical raw materials.
The European Union has also committed to investing $600 billion in the United States and purchasing $750 billion worth of US energy products over three years. Other details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed, along with the details of the agreement.
The agreement was announced emphatically yesterday by Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen (pictured). ‘Today’s agreement brings certainty in uncertain times,’ explained the President of the European Commission. ‘It ensures stability and predictability for citizens and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.’ ‘15% is a clear cap. No cumulation,’ she added.
The additional duty on top of the 5% already applied should therefore stand at 10%. The impact of the duties on the chemical and plastics sectors is still to be clarified, but there is no doubt that 15% tariffs will inevitably place a further heavy burden on the competitiveness and profitability of sectors already penalised by high raw material and energy costs.
